Brown the butter

Preheat oven to 350°F. Line an 8×8-inch baking pan with parchment. Brown butter in a medium saucepan until golden and nutty. Pour into a bowl and whisk in brown sugar immediately — the sugar will dissolve slightly in the heat.
Build the batter

Let the butter-sugar mixture cool 5 minutes, then whisk in the egg and egg yolk, then vanilla. Fold in flour and salt until just combined. Stir in walnuts or chocolate chips if using.
Bake until set but fudgy

Spread batter into the prepared pan — it's thick, use a spatula. Bake 22–25 minutes. The top should be set and slightly cracked at the edges; the centre should have a faint wobble. They firm up completely as they cool. Cut when fully cooled.
